Poverty Prevention at Work.

When RCE stepped in to help this family in 2000 they were literally ‘poor and oppressed’. Disaster not only loomed it had arrived. Three little children were going hungry and cold – and suffered dangerous rat bites at night. People in the village harassed the kids because of unfortunate family circumstances from the past and life seemed utterly without hope. Unable to be feed or clothe their children (while loved) were in danger of abandonment and life in an orphanage or on the street.

This family had immediate needs stemming from serious problems. Food, heat and safety were emergency needs quickly met by RCE. Helping the family resolve underlying problems - spiritual, medical, educational – would take time but the goal was to help the family toward self-sufficiency so that one-day they could take care of their own needs.

RCE helped the family relocate to another area so they could start over with the undeserved persecution of their village. We helped them purchase a modest house with a fruit orchard and woods so the father – who did not have job skills - could learn a living off the land. The mother was able to find employment on a nearby chicken farm.

In time, and with help, from the village church the parents came to know the love and forgiveness of God. They are growing in their faith and training up their children to love and serve the LORD, breaking the cycle of poverty and destructive behavior. Both parents’ work hard and today the family lives a normal rural life. They are welcome in their community with peace in their home.

Today, this family who was shown mercy gives apples and firewood for other families needing the care they once received through RCE’s Poverty Prevention Program.
